Passlane FAQ

What is Passlane?

Passlane is a password manager with two components: 1) A CLI tool for managing and accessing your credentials, and 2) this website passlanevault.com. You can use this website in cases where you don&slquot;t have the CLI available, like mobile devices.

Can I only use the CLI and not store the passwords online?

Yes, you can only use the Passlane CLI. In this case, the passwords are only stored locally on the computer where you use the CLI tool.

I created Passlanevault.com because I wanted to make it possible to have the passwords available on all my devices and computers. Passlanevault.com is an online vault for your passwords, and you can use it to query the passwords from any device with a web browser.

You can also link the CLI tool to your online vault. First, sign up here at passlanevault.com and create an account. Next, link the CLI tool with the vault by running passlane login. After that, the CLI is connected and will store and query the passwords from the online vault.

Is it safe?

Yes, it‘s safe to store passwords in the passlane vault. All passwords are encrypted using the AES 256 cipher, and are decrypted to clear text only when you view them. The client, either the CLI or this website, does the encryption and decryption. The client never sends the password over the network. The master passwords never touch our servers.

This website remembers the master password if you check the "remember password" checkbox when it asks for the master password from you. If you allow it, it then stores the password to local storage in the browser.

How much does this cost?

Passlane is currently 100% free to use.

What is the license and terms of service?

Passlane is developed in Espoo, Finland by Anssi Piirainen. Anssi is a professional software engineer and enjoys doing projects like this in his free time :-) Passlane is provided Provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. The Passlane CLI is open source and available under the GPL v3 license.
